The Democracy for Scotland campaign began after the Scottish referendum held in 1979 failed to achieve the number of votes required to give Scotland devolved powers. The campaign began in 1992 and went on until a further referendum was held in Scotland in 1997. Illustrated log books of the yachts ‘Norma’ and ‘Coquette’, of cruises off the West Coast of Scotland, and also to Brittany and the Channel Islands. Both yachts were owned by Sir Thomas Newnham Deane (1828-1899), an Irish architect. The logs were probably written by his friend, Joseph Manley Todd. They are illustrated with delightful, often humorous, pen and wash drawings by Deane of the party and places they visited.

The manuscript records Playfair`s day-to-day architectural work, with notes of his expenses and a few accounts for clients.
Throughout the period, Playfair was living in London and visiting Scotland once a year. The journal, which is particularly detailed for 1788-1789, gives the names of his clients and information about drawings and other work done for them. The buildings included Cullen House, Bothwell Castle and Dupplin Castle, and were mostly in Scotland.
